‘Carlton Lane’ was designed to encapsulate one of Melbourne’s most unique architectural attributes - the laneway. The form explores a synthesis of two distinct building typologies to unite two distinct building programs, both a community and healthcare center. One portrays the dark and confined laneway systems through narrow passageways as well as the material choice of honed blue stone tiles. While the other typology explores the light-filled laneway often recognized from street view. This typology uses a profilit facade to contrast it’s other half. The building uses height and green spaces to allow light to penetrate through.

The building’s program itself incorporates a Commercial Precinct, General Practice, Nutritionist Practice, Diabetic Clinic, Physiotherapy Clinic, Occupational Clinic, Mental Health Practice, Community Meeting Rooms, Computer Lab, Library and Childcare Facility. This design aims to break down the barriers of social inequity and bring a community together to experience the bustling laneway culture.
